"Jono Podmore unveils Take You Higher – an investigation into the complex bond between music and intoxication.
It’s a relationship which, despite having a profound and ubiquitous impact on our brains, bodies and lives, is so often misunderstood. As the intake of recreational drugs continues to climb, and the clamour to legalise cannabis rises, the book is intended to help both musicians and their audience make informed decisions about the drugs they may take and what they can expect to gain or lose in the process.
As a producer and musician with over 40 years’ experience, Jono Podmore is in a unique position to offer these insights, having first-hand experience of the impact of drugs on the creative process and the wellbeing of artists (including himself). The book goes further still, interviewing scientists, doctors and researchers in the field to explore the neurological function, physical effect and cultural impact of each drug in detail while interviewing artists whose work is strongly identified with drug experiences: Mr C (The Shamen), Alex Paterson (The Orb) and Adrian Sherwood (On-U Sound).
Jono Podmore is Professor of the Practice of Popular Music at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne. Under his performing alias Kumo he has collaborated with artists as diverse as Can, Jamiroquai, Metamono, Swantje Lichtenstein and Jhelisa Anderson. A regular contributor to music and culture magazines, he co-wrote and edited the book Jaki Liebezeit (2020)." (press release)
